Can You Spare a Business District? God Bless

By Mike G.

Welcome to DuPont. The south sound capital of sandwich board signs!

Please, drive slowly so that you may read every excruciating letter of every excruciating word. You do not want to miss out on our four block city center.

The message is clear: We are cheap bastards

Do you need your ducts cleaned? Maybe you have a hankering for some chicken wings while shopping for a home (starting in the low $200s). Perhaps that empty feeling is a spiritual void and you want to find a place of worship? Shhh, I won’t tell, maybe you are in need of a temp labor position.

A sign of the times?

Yes, the city is over $45,000 in to their new branding campaign and this is what we have in the way of business promotion. But it doesn’t stop there, the signs shown here are just the tip of the iceberg. I speculate that there were about 20 to 30 signs located on the “city strip” throughout town. Add that to the various real estate signs and the number goes through the roof (don’t worry, there is probably a sign for a roofer out there too).

Will work for a supermarket

I wonder if the city will want to also allow signs in various foreign languages to prepare for the avalanche of tourists? Signs in Korean, Tagalog, and Spanish would be a good start.

Yes, there is nothing that says tourist destination more than sandwich board signs for our sleepy little (inaccessible) seaside burgh. Who needs print ads? Who needs radio spots? We do just fine with our sandwich board signs. We are out to prove to the rest of Western Washington that we can drawn people into DuPont but the power of suggestion alone, as they drive past on I-5 and 60 MPH. They will be guided by an obsessive urge, like Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, to exit onto Center Drive for a Mocha Latte, slice of pizza, and a starter home.

Please stop again, real soon. I think we may have escalated our marketing efforts to a purple inflatable gorilla by then.

I read your blog on the 22nd of March and now when I drive through town, I have to agree there are too many signs – They are everywhere! It is annoying!
